What Is Area?

Square Meter (m²)

Square Kilometer (km²)
Used for cities, countries, and geographic regions. One km² contains exactly 1,000,000 m² (one million square meters) or 100 hectares. The island of Manhattan, for reference, covers about 59.1 km².
The Hectare (ha)
The hectare is the international standard for land area in agriculture, forestry, and environmental management. It is defined as exactly 10,000 m² — a square 100 meters on each side. One hectare equals approximately 2.471 acres. The word itself comes from the Greek hekaton (hundred) combined with are (a unit of 100 m²), meaning "hundred ares."
The hectare is not an SI unit, but it is accepted for use alongside SI and is the standard land measurement unit used by the United Nations, the EU, and most countries worldwide.
The Acre
The acre has a fascinating historical origin. In medieval England, it was defined as the amount of land a man could plow in a single day using an ox — roughly a strip 220 yards (one furlong) long and 22 yards wide. That gives exactly 4,840 square yards, or about 4,046.86 m². The acre remains the standard land measurement in the United States, the United Kingdom for historical property records, and several other countries.
Square Inch (in²), Square Foot (ft²), Square Yard (yd²)
The imperial area units. Square feet are used heavily in US real estate — American apartments and houses are always advertised in sq ft. One square foot = 144 in² = 0.0929 m². One square yard = 9 ft².
Square Mile (mi²)
Used for large geographic areas in the US. One square mile = 640 acres = 258.999 hectares = 2.590 km².

Manila in the Philippines is one of the densest cities on Earth at over 70,000 people per km². By contrast, Houston, Texas covers a vast area with a density of only about 1,600 people per km².
