Quality Engineer / Dimensional Inspector

The Importance of Traceability

Metrological traceability is the property of a measurement result that can be related to a stated reference through an unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to measurement uncertainty. In plain language: every measurement must be traceable back to national and ultimately international standards.

This chain works as follows: your factory's pressure gauge is calibrated against a reference gauge in your calibration lab → your reference gauge is calibrated by a national calibration service → that service is calibrated against a national standard → the national standard is compared to the BIPM international standard. Each link in this chain is documented, and the uncertainty at each step is quantified and carried forward.

Without traceability, measurements are isolated facts. With it, measurements in Osaka, Ohio, and Oslo can be compared and trusted. Traceability is the foundation of international trade — without it, every country would need to independently verify every measurement made abroad.
