Historical Units No Longer Used
Before the metric system standardized global measurement, the world used a bewildering variety of units — many tied to the human body, local crops, or the vessels used in trade. Some of these units vanished centuries ago; others quietly survived into the modern era, lurking in horse racing, typography, or pub menus. This is their story.
Units of Length: From Fingers to Furlongs
The Cubit
One of humanity's oldest known units of measurement, the cubit was defined as the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. The ancient Egyptians formalized it into the Royal Cubit of approximately 52.3 cm (20.6 inches), used to build the pyramids with extraordinary precision. The Great Pyramid of Giza was laid out to within a fraction of a cubit, demonstrating that standardized units — not modern instruments — made those monuments possible. The word "cubit" comes from the Latin cubitum, meaning elbow.
The Furlong
A furlong was the length of a furrow in a standard English open field — how far an ox could plow without resting. It equals exactly 1/8 of a mile, or 201.168 meters. Horse racing is one of the very few domains where furlongs survived decimalization: race distances are still routinely described as "6 furlongs" or "1 mile 2 furlongs" on courses from Epsom Downs to Churchill Downs.
The Hand
The hand is 4 inches (10.16 cm), based on the breadth of a human hand. Historically used across agriculture, it found its permanent niche in measuring the height of horses. A horse described as "15.2 hands" stands at 15 hands and 2 inches (62 inches, or 157.5 cm) at the withers. This unit has been in continuous use since the 16th century and remains the standard in equestrian sports worldwide.
The Fathom
A fathom equals 6 feet (1.8288 meters), derived from the Old English fæðm, meaning "outstretched arms." Sailors used a knotted rope — a sounding line — to measure ocean depth, pulling it through their outstretched arms one fathom at a time. The phrase "to fathom something" (to understand it deeply) comes directly from this practice of probing unknown depths. Fathoms are still used in some nautical charts and diving contexts.
The League
A league was the distance a person or horse could walk in one hour — roughly 3 miles or 4.8 km. But it was notoriously inconsistent: the Spanish league differed from the English league, the nautical league differed from both. Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea would be a submarine journey of about 96,000 km — the 20,000 leagues refer to horizontal distance traveled, not depth.
The Rod, Pole, and Perch
These three names refer to the same unit: 5.5 yards (16.5 feet or 5.029 meters). It was defined as the length of an ox goad (a stick used to drive oxen) and was fundamental to English land surveying. An acre is defined as 4 rods × 40 rods = 160 square rods. The unit appears in property records well into the 20th century.
The Ell
The ell was a cloth-measuring unit — but it varied dramatically by country. The English ell was 45 inches (114 cm); the Flemish ell was 27 inches (68 cm); the Scottish ell was 37 inches (94 cm). This inconsistency was a constant source of dispute in the cloth trade, which required buyers and sellers to specify "by which ell" they meant. It finally fell out of use as the meter took over textile trade.
Units of Weight: Apothecary and Avoirdupois
Before the gram, a parallel system called apothecary weight governed medicine, and a separate system called avoirdupois governed commerce. Both used units that overlap confusingly.
The Grain
The grain is the smallest traditional unit of mass in both systems, defined as the weight of a single barleycorn — approximately 64.8 milligrams. It survived long enough to appear in some modern firearm reloading specifications (bullet weights in grains) and was the basis of the apothecary system.
The Scruple and Dram
In apothecary weight, 20 grains = 1 scruple (about 1.3 g), and 3 scruples = 1 dram (about 3.9 g). Pharmacists in the 18th century measured out compounds by scruples and drams. To "have scruples" about something — meaning moral hesitation — shares the same Latin root: both involve careful, precise weighing.
The Dram in Spirits
In the avoirdupois system, 1 dram = 1/16 ounce ≈ 1.77 g. In Scotland, a "dram" of whisky is a small serving — the word carrying the old sense of a precisely measured amount. Modern Scottish law doesn't specify the size of a dram, leaving it to the bartender's pour.
Units of Volume: Barrels, Firkins, and More
The Firkin
A firkin was a small wooden barrel used for butter, beer, or fish. Its size varied: a firkin of butter was 56 pounds; a firkin of beer was 9 imperial gallons (about 40.9 liters). The name comes from the Dutch vierdekijn, meaning "fourth" — a firkin was a quarter-barrel. The word survives in pub names ("The Frog and Firkin") more than in daily use.
The Barrel
The barrel is technically still in use — but its volume is anything but standardized. Oil is traded globally in barrels of exactly 42 US gallons (158.987 liters). A US beer barrel is 31 US gallons. A UK barrel is 36 imperial gallons. A barrel of wine is 31.5 US gallons. This persistent ambiguity means you must always specify what kind of barrel you mean.
The Stere
The stere is equal to exactly 1 cubic meter of firewood. It was introduced by the French Republic in 1793 alongside the metric system as a simple way to measure timber. It fell out of general use as the cubic meter became standard, but some European timber merchants still quote prices per stere.
Units of Area: Acres, Ares, and Rods
The Are and Centiare
The are (symbol: a) is a metric unit of land area equal to 100 square meters. Its smaller form, the centiare, is 1 square meter. These units were part of the original metric system but were largely replaced in practice by the hectare (100 ares = 10,000 m²). You'll still encounter ares in French real estate listings and European property surveys.
Typography Units: Points and Picas
Before digital design, typesetters measured everything in points and picas. These units originated in 18th-century European print shops and survived remarkably intact into modern software.
- Point (pt): 1/72 of an inch in the PostScript/DTP standard = 0.3528 mm. Font sizes in Word, InDesign, and CSS still use points.
- Pica: 12 points = 1/6 of an inch = 4.233 mm. Column widths in newspapers were traditionally specified in picas.
Planck Units: The Other Extreme
At the opposite end of the scale from ancient body-based units are Planck units — the smallest physically meaningful measurements in the universe. The Planck length (~1.616 × 10⁻³⁵ m) is the scale at which quantum gravity effects are thought to become significant. A proton is approximately 10²⁰ Planck lengths across. No physical measurement has ever resolved anything at the Planck scale, making these units more theoretical than practical — but they represent the ultimate lower bound of measurement.
What Drove Standardization?
The chaotic variety of historical units wasn't simply ignorance — it reflected local needs, available references (human bodies, local crops, common containers), and the practical difficulty of coordinating standards across regions without modern communication. Three forces drove standardization:
- Trade: Merchants trading across regions needed agreed units. The furlong varied between English counties; the ell varied between nations. Commercial disputes were constant.
- Science: Isaac Newton, Antoine Lavoisier, and other scientists needed reproducible measurements that colleagues across Europe could verify. Ad hoc local units were useless for this purpose.
- Colonization and empire: Imperial powers needed uniform systems to administer territories, levy taxes, and manage logistics across vast distances. Britain's standardization of imperial units in the 19th century was partly a colonial administrative project.
The metric system, introduced by revolutionary France in 1795, succeeded because it was decimal, reproducible from natural constants, and politically neutral — anyone could reconstruct it. The kilogram was originally defined as the mass of a cubic decimeter of water. Today, it's defined from Planck's constant — a value that will never change, making the metric system the most stable measurement standard in human history.
